How Do Muscles Grow
Before we get into how long it takes to build muscle let’s go over how muscles grow. When you do extreme exercise like weightlifting your muscle fibers go through trauma which is also called a muscle injury.
Anytime that your muscles are injured like this the satellite cells on the outside of the muscle fibers are activated. To repair the damage done they join together and in turn, this increases the muscle fiber.
If you are nervous about having to spend all day in the gym in order to build muscle – worry no more. This is not the case, you truly only need to do 20-30 minutes of weight training between 2 to 3 times per week.
Your goal should be to use effective bodybuilding techniques to make sure that you target all of your major muscle groups at least two times during your weekly workouts.
Please keep in mind that building muscle will vary based on your age, sex, and how consistent you are.
How Long Does It Take to Build Muscle?
Now that you know how to build muscle and about how much time you have to spend weight lifting we can talk more about how long you should expect to see results. The answer here is that it can vary.
Results are based on diet, training, rest, and consistency. If you are consistent with all of the above you can gain between 1-2 pounds of lean muscle per month. Like we mentioned this number can vary and it is a realistic number.
If you are disappointed – don’t be. Some people gain muscle faster than others and this is to give you a realistic idea. 1 to 2 pounds of muscle can equate to 10 pounds of muscle in six months!
The good news is that as soon as you start to challenge your muscles to do something that is unfamiliar to them you begin the process of building muscle. This means that the moment you pick up that new dumbbell or do a pushup you are causing stress to your muscle cells.
